OptiCal Sciences specializes in the calibration, service and supply of instruments to be used for measurement of the presence of contaminants in air and also liquid environments. This relates particularly to pharmaceutical and hospital-based research clean rooms in terms of air monitoring, but it may in some cases also apply to other areas of industry where there may be a demand for an ultra-clean environment.

The instruments range from particle counters, which are able to sample up to 100 litres of air per minute, detecting the presence of up to four different size ranges of contaminant particles, through to photometers, which are used to test the integrity of the filters used to keep contaminants out of clean rooms. Particle counters can be supplied as portable or hand-held units as well as variants which are installed permanently in clean room facilities and which monitor continuously. The contaminants in question are of a size far too small to be visible to the naked eye but reveal themselves in the sensitive laser optics of an airborne particle counter.

The liquid particle counters are designed to test for contaminants in a wide variety of industrial applications, for instance in specialized fluids used in the life-critical hydraulics of an airplane through to the water glycol fluid used in the heavy immovable equipment working on the sea bed at oil rigs through to the testing of drinking and waste water. The list of possible liquid testing applications is considerable and wide ranging.
